Investing in ourselves, we commit faithfully to our personal development and self-care practices. We meditate, tap, journal, exercise, take it to the mat, eat clean, work with a personal coach, and still, life can knock us to our knees, test us, and gift us with opportunities to practice. I know.
A recent visit with family and friends bestowed such gifts upon me. I flew down to visit my family and attend my high school’s alumni bash. A tall order, right?! My mother’s experiencing health challenges and I hadn’t been to a high school gathering in over 30 years. Anticipating the emotional waves that I would encounter, I filled myself up with “extra” self-care, including a call with my personal coach, before flying down.
I packed supplemental supports to anchor me over the weekend. I stowed my daily Deepak Chopra guided meditations, Tara Brach’s Radical Acceptance, and my favorite essential oil, Peace and Calm. My heart was open, I felt centered.
The reunion was amazing! We shared a lot of love, hilarious memories, warm embraces, and of course, we danced. A group of us extended our reunion the next day by visiting a classmate, who was unable to attend because of debilitating health issues. I felt inspired, grateful, and full of joy.
The visit with my mother tested me more than I anticipated. My inner alignment faltered as I realized her failing health, defying disposition, and eroding living conditions. I felt helpless, guilty, afraid, and uncomfortable as I shared my concerns, my feelings, and my discontent with her behaviors. My outer alignment informed me that I was stretching my body to extremes. My back, stomach, and head throbbed from being out of sync with my routine wellness practices. On the final day of my visit, with an aching heart, back, knotted stomach, and pounding headache, I drove away feeling defeated and consumed with self-judgment.
Once on the plane, through tears, I processed the weekend and my imperfect action. As my mental fog lifted and even though I felt emotionally splintered, I noticed that I had actually remained calm and centered throughout the weekend; I simply didn’t feel like it. Compassionately, I observed my ability to set boundaries, use my voice, and breath through the pain; I had flowed through a trying weekend with grace. As the plane descended, I reframed my discomfort as a sign of growth and transformation.
New ways of being do not always feel comfortable.
By the time I landed back in my home state, I felt clearer. I felt deep compassion for my mother, and for me. I celebrated how my practices had supported me through an emotionally charged weekend. Had I not made me a priority by investing in my personal development and self-care, I am sure that the weekend would have unfolded much differently…and not for the better.
Investing in ourselves by committing to a personal development and self-care practice is an essential component to living a creative, whole-hearted, intentional life. Whereas I once floundered through life without practices in place, thinking that I knew it all and had it all together, my investment in me is priceless. My life and relationships are better because I make me a priority.
Investing in ourselves through personal development and self-care practices brings us home to our true self and to the haven that rests within each of us. We can’t give our best to others and life, if we don’t give our best to ourselves first.
If you’re in a place that doesn’t feel like home, or you’re not clear about your true self, or you’re tired of feeling depleted in life and in relationships, it might be time to stop contemplating, to stop waiting, and invest in you.
